In Samos, only around 800 of the 3,500+ people seeking asylum are currently accommodated inside the official RIC facility.
2,700 are living on the slopes of the mountain above Vathy in tents and makeshift shelters - which offer very little protection against the cold.

There are people who fall within ‘vulnerable categories’ among the thousands outside of the perimeter of the RIC i.e. newborns, pregnant women, people with disabilities and chronic illnesses, elderly people, SGBV survivors, single women, single parents & separated children.

However, even those who do not fall under the label of ‘vulnerable’ must not be forgotten. The situation affects every single person who is living in camps in both Samos and across Greece.

NGOs in Samos are accommodating people in community centres and providing hot meals.
However, let us not forget that this is a failure of the EU and governments to provide humans with the most basic necessities of shelter, warmth and safety.

It is problematic to rely on NGOs to provide such basic necessities to the most vulnerable people and for the competent authorities to negate the responsibility of ensuring that human rights are not violated - especially as temperatures continue to hit 0°C.

Overcrowded and ill-equipped camps are not safe places for anybody to be confined in.
The @RESCUEorg reports that thousands of people living in the camps on the Aegean Islands are in a mental health crisis and many contemplate suicide.

Winter comes around every year.
We must ask ourselves why the responsible European bodies have not ensured suitable accommodation, meals and sanitation so that people seeking safety in Europe can simply stay warm this winter.
