I watched Holloway vs Kattar
I was impressed w/pressure, precision, variety Max threw
Commentators said Max didn’t spar for this fight. I didn't think much of it. I've heard many fighters not spar
Then @GladiatorLandon got me thinking
Is sparring something to avoid?

There are other fighters who have also said they no longer spar. Such as Lawler, Ferguson, Cerrone and Tim Kennedy. I’m sure there are more.
However, key word here is “NO LONGER” spar.
Every single one of them had wars in the gym and did hard sparring as they were coming up.

Robbie Lawler said he stopped sparring for a long time when he got back into the UFC.
Earlier in his carrer, Lawler came from Pat Miletich camp which was notorious for training, sparring wars.

Chute Boxe that produced Wanderlei Silva and Shogun was another gym that was known for full-out fighting wars in training.
But there comes point of negative return. As you reach high-level of fighting you can’t keep sparring 100%
Holloway no longer needs to spar cause he has so much experience that getting hit in head doesnt make sense. Especially since he has taken much damage in his career already

When you reach a high pro level like all these fighters, with so much cage/gym experience, you want to avoid getting hit in the head, especially during training.
Not sparring isn’t something I would ever do.
Especially when you are starting out and training to become a fighter. You need wars in the gym. Weeds out the weak and trains you for true competitive combat.

I’ve had many all-out wars in the gym and I would NEVER trade them for anything.
Can you get hurt and suffer serious brain damage during this type of sparring?
Of course. But if you are afraid of that, then you should NOT get into combat sports.

If you want to just train and maintain but you will never actually fight, then you should avoid hard-sparring sessions. There is no upside or profit to be made for you to get punched in the head.
