Beautiful #GoldenAge #Haiti 1954 - b4 Hurricane Hazel hit the first blow to the growing tourism industry that the dictatorship would destroy almost permanently. Tourism 1949 - 1954 is one of my favorite topics in 🇭đŸ‡čhistory; hope to drop a little more on it after my book is out! https://twitter.com/haytiens/status/1351271308315799552
I don't have time to do a @dLoCaribbean paper for the conf. @Dr_Saint_Herard is organizing - but if I did, I'd go through lots of Haiti Suns like this one: https://ufdcimages.uflib.ufl.edu/AA/00/01/50/23/00215/AA00015023_00215.pdf with more on tourism that year! ❀
I mean is this FUN or what? ❀ the Golden Age... (even if @clairepayton reminds us that it was never as Golden as we recall....)
Mme Magloire was really throwing the big gala parties. Air conditioning, classical music - @RAMhaiti's beautiful mother Emerante de Pradines performing folkloric 🇭đŸ‡čdance!!

All before #HurricaneHazel.... 😱
Yup, I'm down a rabbit hole when I start reading Haiti Suns from the 1950s. @Djounia_SF check out ads for the #MontJoli from back in the day!
If you were a Hollywood star or a jetsetter, Haiti was the #placetobe in the late 40s/early 50s. Ad from Haiti Sun for the air conditioned #BambocheRoom in the Riviera. Not even the swankiest place in town...
YES, I could be writing a whole article right now on tourism in pre-Hazel 1954. But snipping & tweeting is a whole lot more relaxing. By popular demand I might return to this after #SlaveRevoltonScreen - I have so much good stuff, and every issue gives me more.
Another one - Hotel #IboLĂ©le, Dinner Dance on Friday nights with the #IboLĂ©le orchestra! #Ayibobo!
You know what hasn't changed, 1954 - 2021....

FIVE STAR BARBANCOURT!!!! đŸ„ƒ
You had to be FAAANCY to stay at the Ibo LĂ©le. Check out the tire magnate's daughter coming for her honeymoon in the #HaitiSun society pages....
@Dr_Saint_Herard - LOL, if I can string together a bunch of pics w/commentary, & I don't need to code or get permissions from snips in dLOC sources, maybe I'd consider doing something this summer. đŸ€ŁBut I'm trying not to take on any new work! Multitweet threads are another story.
This one's not on Golden Age tourism - this one's special just for @clairepayton, our resident historian of mid century Haitian cement production! (though you probably already have used the Haiti Sun already)
And let's not forget, #TiRoRo at the #ElRancho - THAT was really the place to be (like the @HotelOloffson on a Thurs night!). If the Troupe folklorique was performing - then you know who was also performing there - @RAMHaiti's mom Emerante de Pradines! #Booked)
It does not take much to send me down a #GoldenAge rabbit hole. That was just one issue of the #Sun in one year - lots of other papers in @dLoCaribbean telling us more about the tourism industry as it developed in that sweet period 49-54!
Ok, I cheated a little and went to 1959 - but I had to get some Andre Narcisse from #HaitiSun. Check out @EvNarc’s celebrated grandpa! This reminds us that the tourism didn’t die immediately in 1957. BUT...
In 1959 we start to get things that are NOT so golden, mixed in with the entertainment info.

And with this chilling pretense that violence & murder was not happening, I’m out...
