We literally teach kids about NIMBY (not in my backyard) central to the coal mining debate- among other things. We need coal for steel, we need pipelines for oil, but the ramifications of it being in “my backyard” is not tolerable.

The keystone pipeline has many of those same issues. If it fails and causes a massive oil spill- well it’s so far away from me in the United States, what do I care? Let’s mine in another country so it doesn’t wreck our mountains and rivers, not my problem.

This is the debate we put to our kids. I don’t tell them the answer. We get them to think and debate and use empathy.
That’s what science teachers do.
Pros, Cons, Evidence but also perspective.
In the end kids usually conclude: this sucks. It’s complicated.

In that, we’ve educated students. Protons exist in the nucleus of atoms. The cell wall is made of phospholipids. Gravity is 9.81m/s^2
But on issues like this- it’s complicated. Our lifestyle requires resources and right now there are awful consequences. NIMBY.
