smp!dream's like the ONE character where we dont have good insight into his pov and guess what?? it's confusing as HECK !! he FREQUENTLY gets blamed for stuff that he didnt even do (cough cough ranboo arc), his motivations are hard to pick out,
he seems to act spontaneously without reasoning behind his actions, he's just. accepted and branded as The Villain bc that's the Easiest thing to do, bc he's such a muddled mess of a character otherwise that it's HARD to understand him.
when characters act similarly to him but we HAVE their perspective, the fandom's reactions are COMPLETELY different (see, vilbur vs smp!dream)

we, as the audience, only have ONE character where we cant really know what's going on in their head, and it's unnerving. it's frustrating. he's hard to understand, so we dont usually bother bc it's easier to say he's just a villain and move on
this applies ,, honestly, long before this arc!! even before smp!dream went fully evil and started acting the way he does now, he was just. The Villain. even if when you stepped back and looked at what he actually did, none of it actually panned out to be all that much
what about every other smp character?? who, on top of having a super limited pov, have to deal with heaps and heaps of trauma and upcoming conflicts and complicated relationships to work out? they cant see everyone's pov. they can only see their own.
think abt niki, who saw Her Wilbur for the LAST TIME when he died at the hands of schlatt. who disappeared with TOMMY for months, only to come back ,, disturbed. different. who she only got back for a few days before he died, but this time, for good
think abt jack, who first had to survive a dictatorship where he saw one of his friends executed, then saw his former president blow up his home. who watched tommy light fire to the DreamSMP king's house, not knowing if this kid would be the third leader to let him down
think abt phil, who hadnt seen his son in forever and came back to a grandson, all grown up, his son torn to pieces by the very country he had bled so much for, begging to die by his blade. think abt how phil might've thought it to be out of mercy
think abt how phil might've thought that he had to kill his own son so he could at least hold him before he died, in case the former residents of lmanburg came with pitchforks and torches and demanded his head. think abt when they went after techno and proved phil right.
think abt how fundy had been betrayed by his father, betrayed by schlatt, betrayed by his country, betrayed by everyone but the one person that believed in him, campaigned with him, and he threw away. think abt how tommy held his head under water and betrayed him too.
think abt techno, who came and slaved for a rebellion to destroy a tyrant, to finally bring peace to the hallowed form and angry eyes of the kids of his friend. who worked so hard to ensure that they would never be hurt by government again - only to see them throw him away
think abt how he did it again, think abt how he DARED to trust this kid again, ready to fight for him, ready to take on the whole goddamn world for him, only for this kid to go back to the same place that had tried to kill techno and had thrown tommy away without looking back
think abt tubbo, there since the beginning, the only one that really knew what the discs Meant to tommy. think abt how he was at the beck and call of one dictator and under the constant scrutiny of another. think abt how he defied everything he believed in for his best friend
think abt how he died for tommy, there, on that podium, think abt how he had risked everything to be a spy and how he didnt regret it even with a firework fired at his skull by one of the very people he was dying for. think abt how he kept fighting, still.
think abt how he became the leader over this fractured country bearing the weight of not one failed leader, but two, think abt how he had to smile and say they'd rebuild it all when their city was rubble at their feet. think abt how he had to choose between
the friends he had made in the joined sufferings under a tyrant and his very best friend. think abt how it would never matter how much it tore his own heart apart, tubbo would always choose to be a good leader for his people, bc he saw the consequences to being selfish
think abt tommy who had lost it all again and again, who had sacrificed his life, his discs, his family, his home, had lost it all and regained it only to lose it all again. who was first forced into a war that he never really believed in but believed enough in wilbur to fight in
think abt how he had to watch wilbur as he fell apart in that ravine, just the two of them, watch as the person he looked up to and cared abt almost more than anyone become the opposite of the man he once was, twisted by his anger and paranoia
think abt how he gave his heart to lmanburg, to wilbur, to techno, to tubbo, gave his everything to them all and watched as each and every one chose someone else instead. think abt how he's run from home to home to home and watched each one get destroyed
think abt how he's just a kid, trying his best, think abt how he gets a little too angry or is a little too selfish but always wants everyone to be happy, in the end, think abt how all he ever wants is the easy peace and friendship he sacrificed for wilbur's vision
and now he's chasing a dream (ha, a Dream) that he knows may never come to be, again. think abt how he keeps chasing it anyways bc if he has that hope then maybe it's all worth it, all the pain and bloodshed and death, bc maybe he'll have the discs and tubbo and it'll all be ok
i could go on. sapnap. george. ranboo. eret. puffy. quackity. punz. hell, even dream. i could keep going and say how all of them are trying and how all of them are hurt and how all of them just want to be happy and live in peace - bc that's all they want. that's all they ALL want
yeah, theyre twisted, and sometimes wrong, and should be held accountable - but dont forget. their perceptions are limited. theyre imperfect - still human. and most of them are really trying their best.
