i feel like people on both sides are upset about this for a lot of reasons that are all wrong, white supremacist, and colonial. all of them.

this is why i am very boring: it all comes back to how it's not your land to hold on to or secede with. https://twitter.com/MikeBrestDC/status/1351296037504344067
every argument in every colonial nation about every level of government, every level of law, the colonial economy, national resources, and national identity all have one giant foundational fracture that makes it all moot:

none of it is yours. all of it is stolen.
"secession" ok it's not your land

"you can't leave the union" it's not YOUR land, either

"democracy" natives didn't vote your government into existence

"ancient history" your declaration of independence is exactly as old, and we are still here and its still our land

"but" no
literally none of this is yours to make policy over, and in canada our chiefs and tribal councils are federal employees explicitly in place to delegitimise our traditional governments.

consulting with the government structure you forced onto us will never be democracy.
if the idea that your large and complex nation is NEVERTHELESS illegitimate is a reach for you to contemplate, imagine how we feel about you trampling and erasing and burning down tens of thousands of years of history just cos saying "please" didn't make you wealthy FAST ENOUGH.
we have always been here and we will always be here, and you need to grow up and get on board with that

like it's 2021 and you're still pretending america exists because of bootstraps and not because of ongoing genocide and the largest theft in the world
we could be speaking anishinaabemowin but you're a bunch of shitheads

stop
"that's ancient history"

no

that's, first of all, NO. it's ongoing, you are still here holding the land as violently as your ancestors

second, when i was born it was not yet a century after first settler contact on some of the coast here.

does that sound ancient to you
you're here putting plaques on and funding the preservation of buildings that are a hundred years old

First Nations have dwellings that at 13,000 years old.

your idea of ancient is a specifically racist set of values
"we brought you technology, you didn't have electricity when we colonized you"

wh

i

neither did you? you fuckin dope? ??

? ??
even your belief that land belongs to the people who cultivate it is based on the self-deluding lie that this land was your "New Eden" all on its own, untouched by human hands, and not cultivated over (again) tens of thousands of years of human labour to make our lives easier.
"it wasn't a paradise, you had wars" yup. we also had extremely complex and layered treaties and mutual alliances that governed how we went to war, with some nations compensating each other for losses and damage incurred after everyone chilled the fuck out.
we don't need to be noble savages to deserve to govern ourselves and cultivate our interrelationship with the land. who the fuck are you?

what makes you think you get to audit our civilisations for comparative worth? who the fuck put you in charge, cos it wasn't us.
like get back to me when "WESTERN CIVILISATION" can go five minutes without killing someone for being poor
if you are a settler with a really specific fetish who imagined me saying any of this, in whole or in part, with my moccasin firmly on your neck, just keep it to yourself and go through the #SettlerSaturday hashtag and send money to brown & Black native youth & trans natives.
anyways i'm going to go watch westerns where everyone dies and hoot and holler and throw popcorn at the screen while my settler husband patiently adores me for some unknowable reason
