The AccessBio CareStart test is one of the cheapest on the market at just under $20 each and currently requires a “deep nasal” (nasalpharynx) sample which isn’t exactly comfortable! but also isn’t totally miserable. Here’s the process in action!
Here’s the test as it runs in time lapse. You can see the fluid “flow” over the paper and reach the control point without binding to the antibodies.
The more expensive BD test is $35 each and also requires the “lab” to use a $300 reader machine that seems to only prevent people from misreading 1 line or 2 on the test strip. The upside is a “shallow nasal” swab which is much more comfortable:
Same process to run the test. This one calls for 15 mins of run time. My (asymptotic) son, who tested positive today after exposure to my wife is on the left. Negative test on the right.
Here’s the “reader”. It’s super helpful!
If Biden used the defense production act to ramp production of these things we could probably drive cost in half and dramatically change the course of the next 100 days as we get the vaccine rollout ramped.
He’s calling for 100 days of masking. Let’s add daily testing too!

Home testing seems most sensible but some people won’t be able or willing.
Make every Starbucks and McDonalds a drive thru test center. Make it easy for people to access. Pay those “providers” $5 per swab (higher margin than they make on current product) vs $100s to a Dr. or lab

What have I missed?
