When you buy into the fantasy that America=white, criticisms of the nation are read as criticisms of the self. The 1776 Commission is not about defending "the greatness of the American founding." It's about defending the perceived greatness and infallibility of whiteness. https://twitter.com/W7VOA/status/1351279345772486656
This is why @nhannahjones's #1619Project so upsets many white ppl. To acknowledge the truth of American history is to be forced to reckon w/ the most negative attributes of whiteness & white people's involvement in the oppression of Black ppl. And what an identity threat this is!
Oh, and on this idea that American=White, see this paper by Devos and Banaji, which is simply titled "American=White?" https://psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2005-01818-003.pdf
Final note: What's vexing abt this all is that as it criticizes identity politics, it traffics in the worst kind--an identity politics unconcerned w/the plight of the marginalized but instead obsessed w/assuaging the bad feelings of a group that still wields so much power. Shame.
