Since some of you are trying to compare Singapore’s National Service (NOT referred as military service) with Sri Lanka’s proposed military service, here are a few facts you should note prior to making any assumptions: https://twitter.com/athaudadasuni/status/1351040858834010114
Singapore’s National Service is a mandatory conscription & duty every male citizen must undertake at age of 18. NS can be served at the armed forces, civil defense force & police force. It’s full time-paid. Objective is to prepare servicemen for SG. https://www.cmpb.gov.sg/web/portal/cmpb/home/about-us/discover-ns
Singapore’s National Education is built around discipline, respect, national pride & racial harmony throughout a child’s life from pre-school to higher ed. Read this National Education Review (2017) to know how http://gov.sg . outlines this:
https://www.moe.gov.sg/docs/default-source/document/education/programmes/national-education/ne-review-2016-2017-booklet.pdf
So please don’t mix up the 2. Singapore DOES NOT conduct National Service with the objective of instilling discipline & having law-abiding citizens. No, that is done through education & child development, not by military training. #SriLanka
