Being American was also a huge advantage, so I do recognize that privilege. I admire my international friends who took the risk without the obvious fallback. 2/
My time in industry made me a better teacher but honestly may have been a slight detriment with respect to my early research (not to mention the math in my program was quite hard.) 3/
However, over time, my work experience and interests have made my research stronger (22 yrs after starting my PhD!) 4/
So being able to have outside options, if you have that luxury, is a pretty smart move, especially for the slightly risk-averse. 5/5
