In 2014, Georgia Democrats sensed opportunity in the state. They thought they could break the state's partisanship and flip a US Senate seat and the Governorship with the descendants of two legendary Georgians: Michelle Nunn & Jason Carter. How did they do? Let's find out.
We start off with the Senate race, where Michelle Nunn faced wealthy businessman David Perdue for this seat, which was being vacated by GOP Senator Saxby Chambliss. Perdue ended up winning here, despite Nunn coming somewhat close in the polls.
And finally, the Governor election. Jason Carter challenged incumbent Republican Governor Nathan Deal here and lost by a little under 8%. He did fare better than Nunn in the rural areas, though he did underperform her in the Atlanta metro area.
So yeah, Nunn and Carter were two pretty good candidates. However, they fell victim to the suburbs not being that Democratic yet and a GOP wave year. Though they were the first to give hope to a Blue Georgia that wouldn't happen for another six years.
