i think about the COWARD! SHOW YOUR TRUE IDENTITY ON SOCIAL MEDIA shit a lot. it's always from people who a) can safely express who they are as themselves and/or b) are artless Philistines who can't appreciate the tradition of playfulness around identity online
like yes it's a problem there's a bunch of bots and bunchofnumbers assholes on social media. but most existing internetty people understood that Twitter was stupid, like all online shit, and came here to carry on being stupid in new fun ways. not to topple govts or do activism
the ground has moved under the feet of people who came here for goofs and giggles and to try on new faces and be a comfortable version of yourself in safety
we don't want to be here as our offline selves, but we also can't ignore the real world. so now when terrible shit is all around and we're stuck in the culture war, we're fighting it in these identities. they were never meant for this but it's just what happens
when all the Boring P Mundane QC types joined in like 2015, wanting to use Twitter for like NETWORKING and DISCUSSION it was like, lol, ok, LinkedIn is that way dad
