There are probably at least a few people who follow me who are 2Ls interested in tax law that are currently interviewing at firms.

Here are a few questions that I've found are useful to ask tax attorneys during interviews:
1. Does the tax practice usually get its work from other attorneys at the firm? Or does it also get work from its own clients, who come with tax-specific issues?
2. What are some of the most interesting tax law issues that you've dealt with recently?
3. For partners: Where do you see the firm's tax practice going in the next five years?
(This one is useful because it gets partners talking about what's on their minds)
4. For associates: How many hours a week do you typically bill?
(This is the most direct way to figure out whether work-life balance is horrible or tolerable)
