Thread - Writing in the Armeno-Turkish alphabet

Armeno-Turkish was a way to write the Ottoman Turkish language using the Armenian alphabet. This script was not just used by Armenians, but also members of the non-Armenian Ottoman Turkish elite. It was used alongside the Arabic script in many official documents.

The first ever Turkish novel, Akabi Hikâyesi, written by Vartan Pasha in 1851,was written using the Armeno-Turkish alphabet.

Generally, the alphabet corresponds to the Western Armenian pronunciation of letters (ա for the a sound, պ for the b sound, etc), but with some exceptions and rules

some letter usage is based on vowel harmony, a feature of Turkic languages:

գ is used for the k sound only before hard vowels (a, ı, o, u)
ք is used for the k sound before soft vowels (e, i, ö, ü)

these match the uses of ق and ك in Ottoman Turkish

ղ is used for both g and ğ before hard vowels (a, ı, o, u)
կ is used for both g and ğ before soft vowels (e, i, ö, ü)

these match the uses of غ and گ in Ottoman Turkish

դ is not used (in Turkish words ), use թ instead
ջ is not used, use չ instead
բ is not used, use փ instead
ռ is not used

use ը for ı
ո is only used in digraphs, for the o sound, use օ
խ is only used for the Arabic خ
use է for the e sound, ե for the ye sound
use հ for the h sound, յ for the y sound (only in diphthongs)

Digraphs:
ու is used for u
իւ is used for ü
էօ is used for ö
նկ is not present in modern Turkish but it is used for the ñ sound ڭ
