I want to share a moment I had today on zoom for a class I’m working with. The class was discussing MLK Jr. and why it’s still important to talk about him and his life. Some students were sharing what it means to them, especially after the events this past year. (1/4)
The class is talking about race and what they as high schoolers can do to make change happen. As the teacher was wrapping up the conversation, one student who doesn’t typically have their camera on, turns it on randomly. (2/4)
And in some kind of protest to the discussion, proudly shoves a Trump 2020 MAGA hat on her head. I could see a few of the students facial expressions change and some seemed confused as to why she would make that kind of statement toward the conversation they were having. (3/4)
To me, it was clear. Racial justice, equity, and loving + accepting people who look different than you is not political. But using memorabilia of your political candidate to show opposition to those topics just shows that he represents the antithesis of racial justice and equity.
