This woman is one of my favorite historical figures... She was so much more than a "first".
She flew her first plane 19 years after planes were INVENTED. Yall, she was an aviation celebrity, traveling all over w/ just her name being the draw for people to come & see her fly. https://twitter.com/ChoctawFreedmen/status/1351257787947474948

She was such a celeb in her field she was asked to be in a movie, but refused because they wanted her to appear in tattered clothes. History books don't really give you the full depth of Besse being a FAMOUS AVIATOR & that being remarkable on it's own.
When she was killed, it was front page news. She was a famous flyer *in her day*, well-known for her abilities. Not for being a "first".
And just because... If they EVER make a movie of Besse Coleman's life (and they had better) my pick is the underrated Aasha Davis to play her:
And I'll add lastly, she did all her amazing stunts and demonstrated her exceptional skill in shoddy unreliable planes. ...In fact, that is how she died.
