1/ It seems to me that among the many crises of our age, one of the most serious is an epistemological crisis. It is increasingly difficult to tell truth from falsehood, and many have given up trying. The primary criterion of “truth” is whether or not we agree with an opinion.
2/ We have exchanged knowledge for power. Knowledge is justified true belief. This means that to qualify as knowledge, a belief must be formed in a responsible and virtuous way. It must also be actually true. Wanting it to be true is insufficient.
3/ We can never make intellectual or moral progress apart from justification & truth. W/o them, all that is left is power: who can assert whose will over another. Who is powerful enough to enforce his/her vision of “truth”? Such scenarios don’t end well.
