By the time I met you it was too late. You had been shot multiple times and would probably never walk again.
You were angry. You didn’t want to be here.

Did you have hope for the future? Did you have plans? Will you have the fortitude to adjust those plans and find new hope? I don’t know that I would.
Meeting you made the work I was doing seem so small and inadequate. For you it was far too little too late.

You are so young.
Your whole life is ahead of you.
Did you feel safe in your neighborhood?
Did you feel like people believed in you?
Did you fall asleep at night to the sound of gunshots on your street?
Had you lost someone you loved to gun violence?

Community gun violence is complicated. It stems from centuries of systemic racism and weak gun laws.
It is made worse by poverty, food insecurity, housing insecurity, a criminal justice system rife with injustice and apathy from so many with power.

The problem and it’s solutions are under-studied and under-funded.
We can fix this.
It will take investment.
It will take bravery on the part of our leaders and action on the part of all citizens.

I am sorry that we failed you. I am sorry we didn’t fix this in time to prevent your injury.
I know my apology is meaningless to you.

I felt hopeless after we met. Like the work we are doing will never be enough. But what right do I have to feel hopeless if we are expecting hope from you?
There is so much work to be done.
I will remember you as I move forward in this work.
