For parents who read the @nytimes A1 story abt screen time & alarm, I have some suggestions... 1/ https://twitter.com/DrKowert/status/1350607278706188290
1. Don't panic. If you even have capacity to worry abt this you are probably privileged. 2/
2. Practice harm reduction. Pinpoint what you want to happen differently (more sleep? less time w/ truly offensive Youtubers? more physical activity?) work on 1 area at a time. 3/
3. GET BUY IN. Be curious, not condemning, of what the kids are doing online. ANYTHING can be an invitation to a learning/bonding conversation. 4/
4. Embarrassing example: My daughter is listening to a lot of pop music while she does 4th grade remotely. She asked me "what is a ho?" Conversation went to stigmatization of sex work& patriarchy. 5/
5. Prioritize realtime interaction (yes to Roblox, minecraft, Zoom, DIscord) over getting lost in the algorithm. 6/
6. Prioritize co-viewing/listening/playing together when you can. 7/
7. Suggest slower media--audiobooks. Podcasts. Voiceover readalouds on Youtube for younger kids. Even slower-paced shows and games. 8/
