Thinking about the banning of the #WalkAway group on Facebook, and of similar actions against right-wingers, and honestly, I'm incredibly pissed off.

(thread)
I'm astounded by the utter immorality, stupidity, and counterproductivity of what the tech giants are doing right now.

Think about it! Really — think about it! What do you think is going to happen because of this?
You have these groups of people who already have strong conspiratorial bends, who feel silenced and out of place, and you take away their voice. You take away their ability to meet, to find each other, to communicate.
Tell me — do you think these groups of people will be less conspiratorial now, or MORE?

Do you think they will have less radicalization in their midst, or MORE?
That's the counterproductive bit. Then there's the immoral aspect of painting large groups of people with a broad brush, of punishing the many for the acts of the few.
What happened at the Capitol was all levels of disturbing and fucked up. But you can't punish Trump supporters and conservatives at large for that. How is that remotely acceptable?
These (increasingly common) bannings are, to me, the same level of absurd as targeting groups of Muslims in the post-9/11 era because you're trying to target extremist terrorists.

It's ridiculous and deeply wrong.
Too many people on the left are comfortable with this, I think, because the people getting punished are their ideological adversaries.

But stop and really consider what's happening. Take off the tribalistic glasses, and you'll see how chilling it is.
And lest anyone think I'm angry because of a tribalistic sense of defending my own, let me state what should be obvious: I am not a conservative! My own feed will make that clear.
I'm angry because I'm scared of right-wing radicals, and I think what the tech giants are doing right now will create MORE OF THEM, not less of them.
Ahhhhh this is just such bad strategy, and so, so wrong all around!

Why, Facebook? (and Twitter... and YouTube...)

WHY, WHY, WHY??!?!!
