Todays rabbit hole thread, courtesy of me announcing my 4x great grandfather had been gaoled for a month in 1842 for larceny. My old school buddy Si suggested his wife had an ancestor who'd been hanged for arson. Here's the brief tale of Noah Peake 1/.
Noah Peake was baptised at Shelfanger near Diss on January 6th 1782, and we don't know too much more about his life other than he became a soldier 2/.
Next we know of Noah is he's on the muster roll of the 1st Battalion Kings Own 4th Regiment of Foot in 1814. I don't know if he was present for the Burning of Washington, but I suspect he'd be chuckling at the news 3/.
We know he served at Busaco, Albuera and Waterloo, and here he is on the Waterloo medal roll 4/.
However, we know that things turned bad for Noah and he apparently fell on hard times. In February 1822 the Agrarian Riots that had swept the land arrived in south Norfolk and Noah was swept up in the trouble with a fellow ex soldier George Fortis. They burned three haystacks 5/.
Noah and George paid for their crimes and were executed at Castle Hill Norwich on April 13th 1822. We have an account of George's last words here: 6/.
Si believed Noah was buried at Bressingham, and so he was, a few days later 7/.
If you want to know more about the events in Norfolk for that period, the details are here in February and April 1822. Maybe there's even a soldier tour in it for @JoJohook2003
as it's literally on her manor. Ends. https://foxearth.org.uk/1822NorfolkChronicle.html
