First, for those who have experienced this harassment, I am sorry. I know this. I feel this. There is not a BIPOC person who is unfamiliar with these situations.

Society is changing, but too slowly. We must move faster & the City of Calgary must be part of the solution.

The commitment to being an anti-racist city began with #yyccc hearings last summer, where personal & systemic examples of racism were raised. This specific situation within CFD was raised, publicly & painfully. Am I to believe that follow up action was not taken?

My job is to provide strategic direction. #yyccc set clear direction to become an anti-racist city. Having done this over 6 mos ago, we need action from Administration. Clear examples must be investigated, or it begs the question: were things swept under the rug & forgotten?

This was a breach of trust, where I felt leadership had taken our commitment to anti-racism to heart. Ignoring harmful actions & the systems that perpetuate them is unacceptable. We must assure Calgarians all of our departments actively respect ALL employees & citizens.

It’s time for a Calgary Fire Commission to oversee not only a commitment to anti-racism but key issues around service levels & budgets. While a Commission won’t solve racism, it can provide citizen oversight & accountability. It’s time for leadership, fairness & action.
