People who are divorced and unpartnered experience the financial situation of not having another adult with whom to share household costs. We used census and population estimate data to explore how this group has grown over the past three decades (2/5)
The number of adults aged 20+ currently divorced and not cohabiting or married has increased more than tenfold 1971-2018 to 1.9 million adults. Keep in mind Canada's population is currently 37.6 million. (3/5)
This study reveals a growing and aging population of divorced adults with some key economic vulnerabilities. Data showed that divorced women are much less economically disadvantaged than in the past. However, circumstances for divorced and unpartnered men have not improved (4/5)
Our findings highlight the increasing economic vulnerability of divorced adults in Canada and point out how divorced adults may have risk profiles that deserve more attention. Link to the paper co-authored w/ Youjin Choi: https://bit.ly/39u1uv3  (5/5)
