Delivered CPD to staff today and what makes up effective exposition now we've moved online (let's be honest it's basically the same stuff). Having said that, I think the following are four sound principles to abide by (1)
TETHERING old knowledge to new knowledge is obviously critical. Lots of research that says we learn new things in the context of things we already know. We can (and should) also tether new knowledge to wider sequences of learning AND the bigger concepts in the curriculum (2)
SCRIPTING and rehearsing is time consuming but beneficial. Plan the examples you will use, front-load sentences with key content, and rehearse delivery. Nailing delivery will never not matter (3)
EMPHASISING key content is more important than ever. Repeat subject-specific vocabulary X3 (and do the same for key messages). Ensure your visuals align with the key message you want to communicate + use your voice to make it clear this is important (4)
This is an example from my lesson. No need to fill the page with extra information. Every extra word or image is an extra burden on cognitive load. Instead, I align my key message with simple visuals (5)
STORYTELLING. There has never been a better time to experiment with telling stories. The risks involved with letting your guard down and getting into character are reduced. If not now, when? (6)
Willingham notes the 'potential power of narrative to help students understand and remember complex subject matter' - they help us create memorable and durable encounters with new knowledge (7)
Practically speaking, what can we do? Try turning a key piece of learning into a memorable story. Highlight character, conflict and a narrative arc to ensure the new content sticks in students' minds. (8)
If you're interested in the full CPD presentation then DM your email and I will send over (minus examples from our school for obvious reasons). END (9)
