Today in America we celebrate a day to honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) His life touched mine as he did for so many others in the world. One of my favorite classes in my studies was a class on the Civil Right Era, led by a professor 1/
Who himself was involved in protests for freedom during the time of Dr. King. It was a very emotional semester. And for the final day the only thing my professor did was turn on King's "I Have a Dream Speech" and he left the room. That was the first time I and many of my 2/
classmates had heard the long form speech and more than just the popular sound bites. Not a dry eye was in the classroom as King finished. The speech is possibly the single greatest piece of rhetoric of the modern era. And the struggles of King's dreams in the speech continue. 3/
King explains that the soul of America is rooted in the ideals that "All men are created equal" and that persons of color have had this promise defaulted by the country. He explains that whites and blacks are linked forever in America and until America honors the ethos that 4/
"All men are created equal" not only are blacks not free but neither are white Americans. I agree. We are one America. Our country was founded with revolutionary, lofty ideals, and those ideals must be fulfilled for the soul of all the people of our country. We are the city 5/
on the hill. And the city on the hill cannot hide, and it cannot hide our sins. We take this day to remember the man who will forever remind us that we as a people will always be linked. And even though Dr. King fell to an assassin's bullet, his dream lives on. 6/
It lives on through me, it lives on through every member of that Civil Rights classroom, lives on through my professor and through every true American who understands that the future of our nation includes all people in our nation. 7/
If you haven't watched the long form "I Have A Dream Speech" today is the perfect day to do so. If you do let me know what you think, for me, my first listen was life changing. I hope you can feel the power the way I did, it is worth your time. Thank you for reading. #MLKDay
