1/ Look, once commercial and political interests are sufficiently involved, even things that are really obvious to the eye test - like the fact SMOKING CAUSES LUNG CANCER - can take decades to prove. Science is hard.

But the opposite turns out to be is true too...
2/ Once people - especially people think they are guardians of the public health - become sufficiently invested in finding answers to problems, they will run roughshod over anyone who asks whether the answers are really answers at all...
3/ And the problem gets WORSE as the stakes and the money and politics get bigger.

The great victory for public health in the 20th century was the defeat of the cigarette companies. But it turned out that victory contained the seeds of its own destruction...
4/ Because ever since epidemiologists have considered themselves holy crusaders who could save the world if only the world would let them. And Covid has revealed the stunning costs of that lack of humility.
