Twitter comes good again! Will report back on the experience. 🤞🤞🤞
Ok I’ve had a play with the preview from the Chelsea v West Ham game and it’s very impressive. I expected just a static camera but it has multiple cameras, video overlaid, access to stats pop-ups. Interesting to see how it performs when the game is live and whether it feels real
Unfortunately it doesn’t allow screenshots because of content rights otherwise I’d share a few for everyone to see.
Yeah so it’s not working. Said “Coming Soon” after the game started but couldn’t click on it to watch it. Restarted the app. Now it won’t load. Restarted the headset. Still nothing 👎👎👎
IT’S WORKING
This is very good. It feels genuinely immersive and picture is high quality. It would be good to experience it when it’s my team playing to see how the feeling changes. I do think that once fans are back it will be a fantastic experience for those who can’t go to the stadium.
Frustrating that you can’t screen record inside the app to share the experience. I get that the content rights are expensive but it would be great marketing for people to see what it’s like.
The best way to describe the experience is that you’re sat in your own private box. There’s a Sky Sports box in VR behind you and pitch in front. It’s a 180 degree view with a floating giant screen above the pitch. There are 3 other angles: 1 behind dugouts, 2 behind goals.
The commentary is same as the TV coverage. One nice feature is an interactive menu at the bottom with stats and line-ups available. I’m biased but I’d love to be able to see Tweets within the experience too, given you can’t see your phone with a headset on @bruzanin @estranges 👀
This promo video gives an idea of the experience towards the end but you can’t really replicate the feeling of it taking up your entire vision.

I imagine it’s hugely expensive for Sky to do right now but so was HD and 4K. Oculus now becoming cheaper so it could really take off. https://twitter.com/skysports/status/1350714725366071298
One of the real benefits, that I’d kind of forgotten about because it’s so long since I’ve been in a stadium, is being able to see the entire pitch. It’s great for seeing the movement off the ball and tactical changes throughout a match. Bielsa would love it.
Worth saying that the app is still in BETA and there are plenty of bugs. Plus the picture does have a tendency to go blurry which I guess is a bandwidth issue because it’s not my connection.
That said, I’d definitely use it again if I had #SkyVIP but I don’t (and won’t be paying extra for it). It’ll be interesting to see if Sky make it an ultra premium offering or try push for mass appeal as Oculus Quest grows. Sky subs are expensive enough so I hope it’s the latter.
Finally, some feature requests, if any Sky folks happen to be reading:
1. In-game Tweets
2. Stadium only audio
3. A director view that changes angles throughout the game
4. More angles and stats
5. On demand match highlights during the game
