DAVID was declared as a man after God's heart; one of the most beloved human in the Bible. But he was FAR from perfect.
He was a good man, but probably not a good Father. I want us to look at some of his failings and learn as young men.

He was named King by Samuel at 17, but he didn't become King of the whole Israel till he was 30. ( That's a long Super story for another day.)
You see between 17 and 30, he made some little errors here and there that culminated into his failings at parenting.

First, it was Amnon (David's first born) that went ahead to rape his own half-sister Tamar.

THIRD ERROR: David was NEVER seen nor heard rebuking his children for their tantrums as a Father. There's high probability that he left the raising of those kids to their different mothers alone.

You can see he was too soft with the way he handled his children's misbehaviors in how he treated Absalom after he had killed his first son.

A solid continuous relationship with God is first.
Then there is need to start preparing mentally, psychologically and prayerfully.

Every young man needs a wise, godly old man as a mentor to get counsel from to be good Fathers.
We need to start taking Fatherhood serious. It's not just about making money.
