Can anyone tell me what the common tropes & memes are in anti-vax misinfo stuff that is being targeted specifically at ethnic minority communities in UK? I want to try & see if I can develop some effective counter-responses but need insight on the enemy. Don't post here, DMs pls.
If you do prefer to post here, please don't post links, just post descriptions. Don't amplify the misinfo.
Here's why I am asking:

'COVID-19: Anti-vaxxers 'targeting ethnic minorities and parents'

'A report has also warned that the movement has adapted far better to social media than public health bodies.'

Let's fight the conspiracist far right feckers back. https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19-anti-vaxxers-targeting-ethnic-minorities-and-parents-12169842
This is good from @sima_kotecha. Let's all have a think about what we can do to tackle this, both online and in our own networks, families and communities please. There's enough racism in Britain without our communities also being targeted by anti-vaxxers. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55666407
I'll have a listen to this later. https://twitter.com/Channel4News/status/1351153391897112579?s=20
This, as ever, powerful piece from @darshnasoni last week is what really got me thinking about the need for us to step up and tackle this. (If Darshna & @Channel4News don't win some serious awards for their work during this pandemic, it'll be a scandal.) https://twitter.com/Channel4News/status/1350075023902519302?s=20
@MartinRCGP, chair of Royal College of GPs, urged Whitehall to begin a public health campaign. “We are concerned that recent reports show that people within BAME communities are not only more likely to be adversely affected by virus but also less likely to accept Covid vaccine”.
“As such, where appropriate, we’re calling for public health communications to be tailored to patients in BAME communities, to reassure them about the efficacy & safety of the vaccine & ultimately encourage them to come forward for their vaccination when they are invited for it.”
‘Nadhim Zahawi admitted he feared some BAME communities could remain exposed to coronavirus despite high expected uptake of jabs.
“My big worry is if 85% of adult population get vaccinated, if the 15% skews heavily to BAME community, virus will very quickly infect that community”
Excellent championship of the pressing need for Govt to address these issues from @DrHNaqvi https://twitter.com/halima_begum/status/1351284375334379520
‘Dr Habib Naqvi, director of the NHS Race and Health Observatory, said language and cultural barriers played a role in fuelling vaccine scepticism, adding: “We need to be clear to our communities that there is no meat or meat products in the vaccine.’

The only way we'll tackle misinformation is if we see it as a civid duty that we are all part of. Thank you.]
Well done @ApsanaBegumMP for raising the issue of BAME communities being disproportionately impacted by Covid at PMQs y'day. @BorisJohnson talked abt "need to reach hard to reach groups in society" to reach the people who are "a little bit Vaccine Hesitant, as the jargon has it".
At least Johnson has learnt that the best people to tackle this pandemic are the people in local government and local public health teams. That took him half a year or more to get his little head round. Why is he such a slow, dithering mess? It's like he's half asleep at wheel.
Very glad to see both @BBCNews & @BBCLondonNews covering vaccine-misinformation on their 10pm evening bulletins. And @mariannaspring was spot on. Need to see this kept up as a concerted effort to turn the tide of conspiracies that have been deliberately disseminated. Keep it up.
Worth a watch. https://twitter.com/mariannaspring/status/1352338174303985664
Glad to hear that @mariannaspring is digging into this. Speak to her, or speak to me if you prefer & I’ll pass it on to her on your behalf. If you’re dealing with people close to you who are being taken in by disinformation, help them & others like them by speaking up & sharing. https://twitter.com/mariannaspring/status/1352356359476543488
This chap is also talking a lot of sense on @BBCNewsnight abt need to get communication around vaccine much clearer:

“Even when you’re vaccinated, behave as if you’re not vaccinated to protect yourself & others.”

This is another KEY message. The vaccine isn’t a major bullet. https://twitter.com/Sander_vdLinden/status/1352355095019622401
Been having this conversation with people and there is a LOT of confusion over what getting vaccinated actually means in terms of safety for self & others. https://twitter.com/RajeshThind/status/1344355974287601664
This sort of misrepresentation from the British newspapers does not help the cause of fighting disinformation. Rather, it simply stokes suspicion among poor people who can’t afford to self-isolate that their concerns & well-being is of no import to the powerful. Are they wrong? https://twitter.com/rowlsmanthorpe/status/1352406696040271874
PR driven lies from Tory MPs do NOT help the cause of transparency, effective government communications & public health. If the party in power is willing to slur journalists in order to evade responsibility for its actions, people will NOT TRUST the authorities, & more will DIE. https://twitter.com/DanielJHerman/status/1352543663121903616

The front page... https://twitter.com/JayMitchinson/status/1352377556557848578
The Tory MPs calling the Newspaper Editor “dangerous and wrong”, & - in a fit of Lord of the Manor pique - “unnecessarily disrespectful”.

The problem is that the government continues to lose what respect it may have been able to muster if it didn’t behave in this Trumpian way.
The confirmation of the accuracy of thr @yorkshirepost story by AN ACTUAL DOCTOR on @BBCr4today.
I don’t care abt partisan ding-dong, I care about facts, & about Public Health being protected. Tory MPs attacking journalists for being “disrespectful” without actually engaging with the facts has a damaging effect on already low public confidence in Govt, esp. among minorities.
I wish Britain had better leadership, quite frankly. The bluff and bluster that has emanated from the Conservatives ever since the pandemic began, as well as the lack of grip that comes from having a shaky relationship to both truth & science has brought our country to its knees. https://twitter.com/johnkruzel/status/1352369436846682115
Like, for example... https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1352451167490613255
Anyway, back to the task in hand. Here’s another Covid Vaccine online information event - this one in GUJARATI - coming up this Sunday. Please share with your Gujarati-speaking friends and family networks to help tackle Vaccine Hesitancy.

Excellent, essential point from @trishgreenhalgh: vaccine hesitancy can and often will be overcome with reasoned argument and engagement. Keep up the dialogue. This will be a long haul process that demands patience and compassion. https://twitter.com/trishgreenhalgh/status/1352567770735636480
This is the way to defend and inform our communities: on Tik Tok, on Whatsapp, wherever the misinformation is being spread we’ve got to be too.

Good report by @Channel4News on problems with confused, unclear Govt messaging over vaccinations.

"All we see [in ICU} is the signalling of the vaccine making people more complacent."

"Even after you have been vaccinated, behave as if you haven't been." - @ReicherStephen
Horrifying that a Dr at vaccination centre said they are not seeing enough BAME people coming in.

WE'VE GOT TO PROTECT OUR OF OUR COMMUNITIES FOLKS.

"The job we all have is to convince every community in the country to send their people to be vaccinated."

Well said @jonsnowC4.
This lady in the tweet above spoke so well. We all need to speak up with her grace and clarity.
This is a useful thread. https://twitter.com/kamleshkhunti/status/1350775017680875521
In particular, these tailored interventions are wide ranging & insightful and worth everyone having a look at. @kamleshkhunti highlights some very useful potential approaches to specific challenges. https://twitter.com/kamleshkhunti/status/1350776379961454592
It doesn’t help matters that the Home Secretary & others in Govt insist on trying to shift blame for the out of control pandemic rates in Britain onto ordinary people when the evidence doesn’t bear that out at all. No wonder there is so little public trust among many communities. https://twitter.com/lewis_goodall/status/1352623528726683650

What fresh bureaucratic madness is this? An administrative problem, one that needs closing. And fast.

“We’re basically being told to turn away ethnic minorities &foreigners, who are fundamental to delivery of healthcare in this country,” the source said.” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/22/foreign-nhs-workers-risk-being-denied-covid-vaccine-england
This is a negative effect of Hostile Environment policies brought in by @theresa_may when she was Home Sec. I hope she helps sort it.

“To hear workers could be denied access to vaccination because they do not have an NHS number and are not from this country is an utter disgrace”
Good people starting to mobilise on this crucial issue. Well done @adilray @ShobnaGulati @MeeraSyal @TVSanjeev @GuzKhanOfficial @SadiqKhan @RomeshRanga et al.

Watch & share widely on all your platforms (especially your Facebook and WhatsApp groups folks!)
My research is also suggesting that issue around fertility is one of the key points of attack of disinformation targeting, especially, Black communities. https://twitter.com/ndodzro/status/1353681433450196992
And this is also on point: we’ll not win people with concerns around the vaccine over without engaging deeply with the nature of their concerns. The disinformation is fairly sophisticated & exploits very old anxieties. For eg: claims around animal products go all way back to 1857 https://twitter.com/SikhYourMind/status/1353829323636150277
Still working on analysing & developing responses to tackle Vaccine Hesitancy & Disinformation Targeting Minorities. Here's a related discussion with a bunch of clever researchers in the US, UK and elsewhere.

Please raise your hand if you can help more. https://twitter.com/RajeshThind/status/1352753330687246343?s=20
This was an excellent report on @Channel4News last night, touching on the deep historical roots of today’s Vaccine Hesitancy among minority communities in a well-informed & unpatronising way. Top drawer TV News. We’d be stuffed w/o C4 News, they nail it almost every time. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 https://twitter.com/nhs_rho/status/1354185512244944896
Bravo @AyshahTull
Why are black people hesitant of health interventions by the State? Well, there are some very good reasons, rooted in murky 20thC history.

Do pls watch this report (link in previous post above). It is really illuminating on the deep & understandable roots of Vaccine Hesitancy. https://twitter.com/AyshahTull/status/1354151538718076933
This is also useful. Read and share.

Arm YOURSELF with facts to help tackle Vaccine Hesitancy in YOUR communities & networks. This battle requires all of us to fight it: civic engagement is the key to protecting our friends, relatives & people in our wider networks from Disinfo https://twitter.com/BHRUT_NHS/status/1354210628588679170
This is where the combination of deliberate, malicious disinformation & uninformed, dangerous misinformation leads. These people aren’t to be condescended to; you can hear that they just want what is best for their relative but have been fed lies & poor info. We must tackle this. https://twitter.com/kemz_1/status/1354076978538815489
This is a good Q&A format from @Channel4News, directly addressing specific concerns from representatives of different minority communities. He's good Van Tam: most credible of Govt's public facing medical experts imho. Feels like he's genuine abt wanting to help ALL communities.
https://twitter.com/Hayley_Barlow/status/1354447844531384324?s=20
Good too that people got to give feedback & were critical. Transparency in communication - both in terms of what works & what doesn't - feels a better way forward than Command & Control. Iterative, w feedback loops based on openness WILL slowly rebuild trust imo. @Channel4News
In Social Media age, crucial to give folks a feedback loop, a way to engage, ask Qs, express concerns. Then they're actively engaged & help to develop, hone, clarify comms. Focus groups not enough. Random bod at Govt. pressers w pre-selected Qs feels like Question Time @ Kremlin
https://twitter.com/bhrut_nhs/status/1354447887653023745
Good work from @jburnmurdoch, based on data wrangling/analysis from @bengoldacre et al, on HUGE SCALE of the challenge wrt take up of Covid Vaccines in minority AND deprived communities.

‘White people in England aged 80+ are being vaccinated at TWICE RATE of black people’ https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1354535502439972864
‘THE VERY GROUPS THAT ARE MOST AT RISK FROM THE DISEASE, ARE THUS FAR THE LEAST LIKELY TO HAVE RECEIVED PROTECTION.’

This is a TIME-BOMB. Government MUST put far more resources into this or we will have a major problem for years to come, both in terms of health & social harmony. https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1354535506349056011
Here is @bengoldacre’s timely & highly pertinent thread outlining their findings. They are going to be repeating this analysis weekly from now on they say: very welcome indeed. (I know Ben a bit from mutual friends years back, & his attention to these matters is VERY welcome. https://twitter.com/bengoldacre/status/1354353492266246146
https://twitter.com/bengoldacre/status/1354353841865699330
Another area of concern, cutting across all communities, is lower levels of vaccinations among over 80s w mental illness, dementia & learning disability. I’ve had few conversations with health workers that make plain this is a grave concern.

We MUST look after ALL vulnerable. https://twitter.com/bengoldacre/status/1354355017814302722
, @bengoldacre & the team have offered to break this data down further for regional NHS teams that would like to better understand how vaccination is progressing in their area. Just get in touch with them. The code is open-source & they’ll even talk you through it if you want. 👏🏾 https://twitter.com/bengoldacre/status/1354355501694386176
HOWEVER: data also points to glaring holes & raises Qs it does not answer by itself.

Key Qs: WHY is there such a disjuncture of vaccine take up bw different ethnic groups? What are key drivers?

We know there is vaccine hesitancy, but what part does poor JVCI priorities play? https://twitter.com/bengoldacre/status/1354355410954833920
Some experts who have a DEEP understanding of health issues among minority communities, such as @parthaskar, Qs the way the JVCI is constituted & the way it comes to its decisions on prioritising groups.

Weeks after this issue has arisen, JVCI has NOT prioritised it. A failure. https://twitter.com/parthaskar/status/1354698178428284929
Eg. https://twitter.com/hosniehmarbini/status/1354710137521496065
The JVCI seems intransigent on tackling this. Why?

For political reasons? Is our Bluekip Govt. unwilling to be seen to give what their base of voters might see as preferential treatment to non-white people? They deny structural racism exists, so they don’t want to try to fix it? https://twitter.com/parthaskar/status/1354710472084361223
As ever, Tory reluctance to tackle the needs of especially vulnerable groups - which can only be for ideological reasons - is impacting a whole range of people, not only ethnic minorities. The homeless, those with dementia & mental illness..

Qs: Is the JVCI fit for purpose? https://twitter.com/kennedy22debbie/status/1354705227954479104
We need to go right back to basics it seems to me, & have a proper national conversation about who the JVCI is prioritising. We’ve got to address these issues from all angles: Vaccine Hesitancy, yes, but is that the WHOLE PROBLEM? I doubt it. We MUST prioritise minority groups. https://twitter.com/dazmeeks/status/1354701631779172358
As with redirection of Vaccines from North West that was revealed last week, we need to be asking serious Qs about how vaccines are being distributed, targeted & prioritised. Some say there are signs of a postcode lottery for vaccines. Are Tories playing to their southern base? https://twitter.com/Indy_Neogy/status/1354728740228657152
[Question: is this thread getting too long? Should I start a new one and link it to this one? Or keep it going here? @nhhoward - what say you?]
This bipartisan video is welcome. Anything that may persuade people to be vaccinated is.

BUT:
When @KemiBadenoch & her Govt deny that racism has structural elements, this risks seeming like window-dressing & PR. You have real POWER: please USE IT. Your Culture War is killing us. https://twitter.com/KemiBadenoch/status/1354565664204271618
Address the make of up the JVCI. Put some experts from minority backgrounds with deep understanding of the issues on the Committee.

Make JVCI decision making more transparent.

Realise that Britain will become ungovernable if some communities are left behind with vaccinations.

A major cause of distrust of public health messages among so many people in BAME communities is the decade long track record of this Govt. Even I find it hard to trust them to be honest & straightforward, & to not be self-serving shit-stirrers who will sacrifice us all for power. https://twitter.com/jane__bradley/status/1355160808855134208
It gives me no pleasure to write that. I’ve disagreed with other British Governments before - Tory, Labour & Coalition - but I’ve never, ever had the terrifying sense of being ruled over by people with such fleeting regard for anything other than gripping on to power. It’s scary.
At this stage, a few of the Tory grown ups back round table to address the catastrophe this present administration has made of this pandemic would be massively reassuring. @Jeremy_Hunt @sajidjavid Dominic Grieve, @RoryStewartUK @theresa_may - a few people who know how to govern.
STILL like this!
