They’d already given up on him and were playing Beethoven instead when he arrived. Then after they played, Liszt apparently said such disparaging things about Mendelssohn (who had only died the year before) that Robert flew into an uncharacteristic rage
And stormed out. Liszt tried to laugh it off, that it was just friendly debate between friends. But for the Schumanns it wasn’t. They were insulted that Liszt would defame their late beloved friend whom Liszt knew they loved in their own home.
Liszt attempted to heal the breech by giving performances of Robert’s music in Weimar. And they continued to have discourse. But Liszt was never invited back to the Schumann house.
