We will be posting reviews publicly alongside preprints and have already begun instructing our editors and reviewers to prepare public reviews for all manuscripts under consideration 4/8
However, if our editors decide a paper is not appropriate for eLife, we will allow authors to postpone the posting of the public review until the paper is published elsewhere 5/8
While our long-term goal is to move away from the use of journal titles as the primary measure of research quality, we are mindful that they remain important for many researchers as they pursue their careers 6/8
Thus, while we develop alternatives, we will continue to select a subset of the papers we review for "publication" in eLife, making this decision an act of curation on a paper already published by authors 7/8
We are committed to working with our community and observing the impact of these changes to make sure we get our processes and policies right 8/8
