I think statements like "make someone work in a restaurant for a day & they'll see what it's like!" are super flawed, first of all it's a job not a weird punishment & if someone doesn't care about others, working a restaurant job they don't depend on isn't going to teach them.
I worked in restaurants for YEARS and you can't teach someone how it feels to have to put up with customers and bosses and other staff yelling in your face or sexually harassing you because you will be houseless otherwise. That's not a "one day on the job" lesson.
Many wonderful people work in restaurants, but so do shitty people, just like any other job. Many workers also don't tip and/or treat servers badly. The problem is that you give people the opportunity to wield power over others and they'll do it and there is no easy fix for that.
