“The measure of a man’s estimate of your strength,
is the kind of weapons he feels that he must use
in order to hold you fast in a prescribed place.”

your enemies know you are STRONG
that’s why they put so much energy into defeating you

“Too many educated colored people,
and it would upset the whole balance of power in the caste system
and give other colored people ideas.”

Caste system is a ‘class structure’
those on the bottom are not meant to rise up.
Some of our systems (education/government) were built on these principles

“Sometimes, you have to stoop to conquer.”
The things that people of color have to resort to
because they are constantly denied fair opportunities
yet they remain proud and hopeful
that is truly inspiring

“that one set of people could be in a cage,
and the people outside couldn’t see the bars.”

I struggle talking about racial issues
Especially since most of my time has been in predominantly white, corporate settings

However, I am now realizing
that it is up to me to make anyone in my circle of influence
aware of the issues
not just of the past, but also the ones I face often.

Silence is acceptance
So I am committing to speaking up more
And hope you will join me in having uncomfortable conversations with the people in your circle

“in the 1960s, when, because of the more barefaced violence during the South’s desperate last stand against civil rights, it was actually more treacherous to leave certain isolated precincts of the rural South than perhaps at any time since slavery”
This was only 50 years ago
Its pretty scary knowing that my mom was alive during this time
Also scary to think about how those in power then
Have influenced those in power now

“...and once passed the white people’s church. The kids came out of the church when they saw him. They threw rocks and bricks and called him the vilest names”
Wonder what these kids from the sixties are up to today

“Contrary to modern-day assumptions, for much of the history of the United States-
from the Draft Riots of the 1860s to the violence over desegregation a century later
-riots were often carried out by disaffected whites against groups perceived as threats to their survival.”

The book contains more details on the frequency and the ferocity of these riots.
Something I have never seen or heard when learning this country’s history

“The police, charged with quelling the riot, in some cases joined in, as did some in the state militia sent in to restore order, actions that resulted in seven courts-martial.”
“the first thing I give them credit for is getting out of the situation they were in.… Maybe they don’t know how to dress or comb their hair or anything, but their children will and their children will.”
This segment spoke on ‘established’ blacks in the north, looking down on those that ran away from treacherous southern living.
These newcomers were given a hard time for not fitting in.
Life was hard on either side

“I can conceive of no Negro native to this country who has not,
by the age of puberty, been irreparably scarred by the conditions of his life.…
The wonder is not that so many are ruined but that so many survive. — JAMES BALDWIN”

I am so proud of my people

despite all we go through
We continue to survive and THRIVE
