i just realized that i simply cannot imagine levi trying to stop eren from what he's doing, it doesn't fit with my understanding of levi's character at all, because... wouldn't that equate to levi trying to cage him, to stop eren from being free?
my argument will be structured as following:
1. eren feels caged and his main motivation is to break free
2. levi is a metaphor for freedom to eren
3. levi is actually empowering eren to be free to do whatever he decides to do
1. eren feels caged and his main motivation is to break free

1. right from chapter on forward, eren feels caged. first by the walls, later by everyone who is against eldians and paradis. he actively despises everyone who isnt motivated to do anything against captivity.
his core belief is the belief that everyone is free and should be free. no matter their status, rank, position in life; your basic right is the right to be free, just because you have been born.
this is the reason why exactly this sentence just keeps coming up, no matter in which stage of his life he is; it doesn't matter whether its about the walls, the titans, or the oppression by marley.
(in this sense, i don't really understand why people say eren as a character had much development; he had very little development in his beliefs and motivations, he just gained knowledge and skills/possibilities. his core has been the very same from chapter one until now.)
2. eren's coping has always been purely solution oriented (he doesn't do well with emotional coping). go outside the walls? join the survey corps. freedom for himself and the people he loves? kill everyone except eldians.
he understands the consequences of his actions, but he is purely solution/goal oriented. his ends justify the means, and he strives to obtain the means; get better at killing titans, master the attack titan, crystallize, eat the warhammer, take zeke's royal blood.
one of his very first means towards freedom can be clearly seen in the very moment he meets levi: levi, in this moment, is nothing else that one of the means eren needs to obtain freedom.
survey corps = get outside the walls and kill titans.
levi = get better at it, serve under the person who is closest to obtaining freedom.
and levi is the one who accepts eren into the survey corps, therefore giving eren the best shot at freedom he has ever had.

3. i'd argue that levi is the only character in snk who sees eren for who he really is, and has always had the capacity of foreseeing what is currently happening in the manga.
levi knows that eren is an honest to god monster, he always has, YET LEVI DECIDED TO EMPOWER EREN TO MAKE HIS OWN DECISIONS AND PLAN HIS OWN ACTIONS.
and again, this is something that doesn’t change until the time skip? levi has never, for one second, been wrong about eren's true nature, and yet he encouraged him to choose his own path, and not even have regrets over anything he does to obtain his goals
in the reiss cave, it is the same; he gives eren AUTONOMY AND RESPONSIBILITY, well knowing eren's true unforgiving monstrous nature.
he, in fact, gave eren the freedom to become who he is today.
he, in fact, gave eren the freedom to become who he is today.
so, i have all this knowledge about eren's motivations and the way levi sees eren.
so why would levi now take eren's freedom away? i am struggling so hard with this. i'm not deluding myself anymore with a sEcReT eReRi PlAn but honestly, no matter if levi is still bound to erwin

or whatever he feels for his fallen comrades, the fact that he knows and has always encouraged eren, downright fostered eren's decisiveness and empowered him to strive for his own goals, doesn't go with how he apparently now wants to stop him.
is this why he regrets not talking to eren? would he have wanted to correct his own influence on eren? because, as i see it, eren's beliefs and convictions did nothing but grow and bloom under levi's mentorship, levi even shared those with eren.
i was trying to structure my feelings about eren and levi by just typing out levi's current pov (in a shippy way) and thats what motivated this thread
