Ten years after the '45 'rebellion' the Highland's had 51% of Scotland's population, 652,000 to the Central Belt's 464,000. Today that's 235,000 compared to 3,500,000.
So the common refrain of 'there's nothing there, only bogs and hills' is utterly bogus, particularly when you look at places like Urray and Sudday with a combined population then of over 3,000 then, but just a handful of folk today.
Oddest find is the number of err 'Papists' registered in Scotland. Unsurprisingly zero in Govan but 2 in Hamilton.
Whereas Kilmanavaig, 15 miles north of Fort William had a population of 2995, including 1,400 'Papists'. If you're a McDonnell, Kennedy or a Cameron, chances are some your family came from here. It's better known as Spean Bridge today with the Commando statue.
