I know it's MLK Day.. But I want to use my article today to talk about not just MLK but the prophetic tradition of the Black church- and the misuses of it. A short thread.
by not acknowledging how conservatives used the Black church and its tradition of prophetic lament as a weapon, Obama inadvertently put himself on the same side of the Loeffler campaign in its attacks on Warnock, even though he was campaigning for Warnock. https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/martin-luther-king-jr-s-legacy-lives-rev-dr-raphael-ncna1254513
I know a lot of folks were not happy with me coming at the Obama's for continuing to trash the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Stay mad.. because I'm about to make you madder.
I wrote this piece about @ReverendWarnock in part not only because of his win, but how the prophetic tradition of the black church is not a. a monolith, b. can be attacked by both black and white folks, and c. why we need it even more today especially in politics
White Evangelicals interference and links to the Republican Party have fueled racism and even the capitol insurrectionists last week. I want all the Evangelicals who say "this isn't us" to tell me how many black churches would have broken into the capital to pray and smear feces
Obama never stopped to criticize the evangelicals like Franklin Graham who called for his birth certificate, but he still has a lot of smoke for Rev. Wright, who baptized his children. Yes, the "God Damn America" sermon hurt his campaign,... but he is still bashing him.
For those of you who don't know what's happened with Rev. Wright since, he's had a stroke. He's not a perfect man by any means. He didn't handle all of the attention back then well but damn it, I am so disappointed in the Obama's for dredging this up to sell a book and yet...
Claim to want to help the Republican Party at the same time by saying you are for Rev. Warnock when you have time and time again used the Black church tradition to both burnish your bonafides, and yet trash the prophet who brought you and taught you.
Here's the kicker. Black folks didn't like King either. Some thought he was too radical. Some wanted him to be a gradualist. The National Baptists split in part because of how they thought the civil rights movement should be handled.
So on this MLK day, let's support the preachers prophets and advocates in the black community calling out injustice, and advocating for a better country. Let's not trash people when they are down and out.
below is Rev. Wright's sermon from Howard University chapel yesterday. As you can see, he's not quite the threat to society that the former president and first lady have made him out to be. I hope they don't do the same to @ReverendWarnock someday.
To close, I don't ever want to hear a certain former president use a black preacher's cadence again until he recognizes and repents of how he's trashed the tradition and its people for political gain. And that's that on THAT.
