45% of waste thrown into an average black bin in North Somerset could have been recycled. The most noticeable is food waste at 27%.

Food waste that is sent to landfill releases methane, a greenhouse gas that is 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
Recycled food waste is processed at the AD plant in W-s-M. Here we convert the methane produced and turn it into electricity.

Are you recycling your food waste? Order your containers for free from our website http://www.n-somerset.gov.uk/my-services/bins-recycling/order-new-bin
As long as the containers are kept clean there will be no issue with smelly odour. Wrap your food waste to reduce mess and once emptied each week give your container a wash out. Much more hygienic than leaving food to rot in your bin for two weeks.
What can you use to wrap your food waste….Plastic bags, old bread bags, old newspaper. We ask you to use plastic as it is easier to separate from the organic material than the compostable ones. The compostable bags take longer to decompose than the food so must be removed.
