You can’t celebrate Dr. King while simultaneously rejecting the fierce love he prescribed America. But for decades, we have praised his name while cursing the policies he lived and was killed for championing.

On this #MLKDay , we need genuine repentance: a turn toward justice. /1
Dr. King wrote “love without power is sentimental and anemic,” but that’s exactly how far too many folks treat the great reverend: As love they can wear without commitment.

His words are not a magic balm to absolve oneself of racism. And right now, they indict this country. /2
“Frankly, I have yet to engage in a direct action campaign that was ‘well timed’ in the view of those who have not suffered,” the evils of racism. /6
May this year be filled with more Dr. King-like action than King quotes.

Because here’s the other thing I know: His disciplined hope refused cower, even under brutal oppression. Despite our nation’s sinful inaction, he wouldn’t stop believing in love that can set us free. /8
From Birmingham Jail he promised, “We will win our freedom because the sacred heritage of our nation and the eternal will of God are embodied in our echoing demands.”

Those words are as true as when #MLK wrote them: Our demands still echo, but we will win our freedom. /9
