I work at a hospital and keep in mind it can take a month or two to get approved for the program. Make sure you send ALL the info they ask for and make sure you let anyone coming at you with bills know you're waiting to be approved. (1) https://twitter.com/gsuberland/status/1351091796806426628
I can't speak for other hospitals but at ours it takes a while and is nearly impossible to get through to someone in the program by phone without an extension. So make sure you get the first & last name and department of people in the program you're working with (2)
And get their extension if you can. Otherwise just to check on your status could take hours. Make sure you document everything when you're working with hospital stuff and always have all your papers handy in one place. (3)
Most of the time the reason my department (I answer phones) can't help people is because they don't remember enough information for us to connect them to the right person. Because of privacy laws not everyone can just look you up, especially in a really big hospital. (4)
So document the names of the people who are helping you AND their department (cause you also don't want to get someone like me on the chopping block for telling you something another department told you that we aren't qualified to say). (5)
Actually correction to the first tweet, it usually takes a month MINIMUM. Set up a meeting a financial counsellor at the hospital and get their first AND last name and if you can, an extension. They can keep you up to date on your status and any other options you have.
