In the last two years I’ve had pieces rejected from journals at least 8 times. Something that I’ve learned about my own writing and the writing process for shorter projects is that there is an art to economical arguments.+
When I first started my PhD I thought a strong argument was a comprehensive argument. Put in as much evidence as possible. As I wrote, however, and received feedback from peers I learned that more is not always better.+
You need to select the best evidence. You need to lead with your strongest evidence (something @JeremiahCoogan taught me). And most importantly of all, addressing counter arguments makes your piece stronger.+
At the same time, you won’t know what is the best evidence is until you gather it all in one place. Then you can cull and push things into footnotes or leave out etc.
How do you craft your arguments?
How do you craft your arguments?
I should add that sometimes you won’t know a counter argument until #Reviewer2 illuminates it for you...
