Did you know that in the UK less than 2% of published children’s authors are British People of Colour?

And that only 5% of UK kids books have a non-white main character?

Pathways is a programme for illustrators from under-represented backgrounds that aims to change that.
Run by @PopUpFestival and @illustrationhq Pathways is a two-year illustration programme like no other, aiming to change the face of children’s illustration in the UK to better reflect the world as it is.
The Pathways programme utilises the knowledge and experience of established illustrators, university illustration tutors, and editors and art directors from inside the publishing industry in order to develop the next generation of incredible and diverse children’s illustrators.
The unique thing about Pathways is that we work with people across the industry, with 21 affiliated publishers and universities, so that when the programme is over our mentees aren’t just incredible illustrators, they’re also prepared to navigate the publishing industry.
For too long, the UK children’s publishing industry has failed to represent the wonderful diversity of the world in which we live. We might not be able to change the entire industry overnight, but through Pathways we hope to make it better, one illustrator at a time.
