I hate to say it, but NDP supporters are routinely misinformed by their leader. Mr. Singh sells simplistic "solutions" to social problems, ignoring the constitutional divisions of power in this nation. He can't possibly be ignorant about them. Can he? /2 #cdnpoli
2/ Whether it's LTC (a disaster, provincial responsibility) or disability income supports (provincial responsibility), he sells the idea that the federal government just lacks the will and a stroke of the NDP pen would solve everything. /3
3/ There is absolutely no question that the pandemic has laid bare significant systemic social problems in Canada and has hopefully motivated leaders to address them, but Mr. Singh needs to stop telling NDP supporters that the federal government has the "parental" fix. /4
4/ And the reality is that many provinces have governments that would be loath to help the federal government make any progress on these problems lest it be able to take credit. How many presumably cooperative NDP-governed provinces do we have? One.
So, NDP supporters certainly need to put the pressure on provinces to negotiate in good faith.
