The #CERAStudy studied levels of distress & trauma in 5440 doctors working in anaesthetics, emergency medicine & intensive care during the peak of the first wave of the pandemic.
The highest levels of distress were found during the acceleration period (44.7%), with the highest levels of trauma (23.7%) at the peak. There was some natural recovery but a high level of residual distress & trauma. #CERAStudy
Factors associated with higher rates of trauma were fear of infection to family & self, fears of worsening mental health and ethnicity. Ethnicity is a novel predictive marker for trauma. #CERAStudy
The level of probable PTSD was 12.6% at the peak & 10.1% during the aftermath. We know from previous pandemics that these symptoms will likely persist without targeted intervention and psychological therapies. #CERAStudy
Policymakers must prevent future adverse effects through ensuring the provision of adequate PPE, recognising psychological distress & improving pathways to accessing psychological care. #CERAStudy
