there is so much that native jp readers just understand about hinata and kageyama just from their names alone that isnt fully appreciated by western/english readers
日向 翔陽 ; hinata shouyou

日/hi ; sunshine, day, combined with 向, 日向 means "facing the sun"

翔/shou ; fly/soar

陽/you ; principle of yang, the positive
影山 飛雄 ; kageyama tobio

影/kage ; shadow, shade. "kage" is also the pronunciation for 陰. this is the principle of yin, in contrast to hinatas 陽.

山/yama ; mountain.

飛/tobi ; fly/soar. both he and hinata share this.

雄/o ; man, leader, hero.
where kageyamas name has "mountain" in it, note that hinata crosses a mountain every day in order to get to karasuno. illustrates kageyama being his greatest opponent.
you can see how that is portrayed here
the yang/yin contrast is even more important. they cant exist without the other. this doesnt mean they are dependent on each other (far from it).

its that yin enhances yang, and yang enhances yin.
yang is associated with white and yin is associated with black.

there is a significance to hinata being in black, and kageyama being in white.

they take on each others attributes in order to be their strongest selves. they are each other strongest ally.
the two of them sharing the kanji for "fly" (飛 and 翔) serves to show how they share the same passion, the same desire.

(note how they are also wearing black + white here!)
the last major panels in haikyuu really show how versatile this dynamic is.

they will fly together towards the same future, as each others greatest ally and...
and as each others greatest opponent.

and even as opponents, they are each others partner as they both share the same team name "wings", the translation for both asas and ali.
their given names first kanji, 飛 and 翔, are even combined by furudate to show that above all else, whether its allies or opponents, they are partners.

飛翔/hishou ; soaring
the entire story is about them bringing balance to one another so that they can be the strongest version of themselves.

each others greatest ally and opponent.

partners. https://open.spotify.com/track/0PYmO55JPwEWgtyJbkN6mq?si=T2KDek1DRn-nFfaJN-2Rqg
