The Trump ban did not reveal the power of big tech — far from it. It actually proved how little they hold. The unprecedented power of silencing the POTUS passed throught them in that moment, yes, but it was never "theirs", and it still isn't today (even after the ban) 1/5
The act in itself wasn't even a decision to ban him; it was a "decision" to let other people decide. Trump had more followers than twitter has daily active users in the US, so the idea that they did this because "they can" or to gain more "power", is ridicolous. 2/5
It made them give up the biggest user with the highest level of engagment (who also had their logo on every newspaper's frontpages for the past 4 years). So no, big tech isn't the "new government". The moment they pressed the button they didn't "decided" to get rid of him, 3/5
they just acknowledged that the power to choose whether they can have him or not in the first place was never in their hands. It was never up to them, but to the press — all the latter had to do was apply the right amount of pressure and gain enough “consensus”. 4/5
That's the monster we need to go after first. Silicon Valley is just a bunch of rich kids with very little control over themselves and, apparently, even over their own companies. 5/5
