Alternatives to hurting yourself; a thread
For the sensation:
- rub ice between your fingertips or the desired location
- run your hands under cold/hot water
- take a hot/cold shower
- put PVA glue on your hands and then peel it off
- massage yourself where you want to hurt
- bite into a hot chilli
When you're feeling angry/restless:
- stab a piece of fruit
- pop bubble wrap
- pop balloons
- scribble on paper until the whole page is covered
- tear up a newspaper
- beat up a stuffed toy
For a distraction:
- play solitaire
- count as high as you can
- count the tiles in your bathroom
- colour coordinate your wardrobe
- watch your favourite movie/tv show
When you're feeling panic/fear:
- think about 5 things you can see, hear and feel
- listen to music and blank out everything else
- meditate or do yoga
- hug a pillow or plush toy
- go for a walk
When you're feeling guilty/sad/lonely:
- play with/hang out with a pet
- call or contact someone you trust
- plan your future
- watch funny videos on YouTube
- let yourself cry
To give the illusion of blood:
- draw on yourself with red pen/red paint
- draw a butterfly
- make wounds with makeup
- drip red food colouring/ketchup down your arm
- draw cuts with nail polish
To make you think twice:
- avoid temptation
- place a bandaid over the desired location
- list things you like about yourself
- cover up your skin
- tell yourself: "I don't deserve to be hurt"
To sort out your feelings:
- call/talk to someone you trust
- write down how you feel then destroy it
- list what you're grateful for
- if no one is available to talk to, talk to yourself and record it so you can review it
