The concepts of efficacy, effectiveness and efficiency are often misunderstood or ignored altogether. When it comes to interventions, in this case masks, we need to make the following distinctions: https://twitter.com/JoeBiden/status/1350878051710750725
Efficacy: do masks reduce transmission under ideal conditions (e.g. in hospital settings)?
Effectiveness: do mask reduce transmission in real life situations?. If a policy requires 100% compliance to work and it's impossible to achieve it, then the policy is ineffective.

Eciency: if masks are effective, what is the cost benefit ratio?
While there is some evidence to support efficacy, the effectiveness is clearly weak: cases were/are rising despite strict mask mandates.

However, since we're being asked to mask anyway, can we please discuss efficiency? https://www.google.com/amp/s/beta.ctvnews.ca/national/sci-tech/2020/12/7/1_5221239.html
