In speaking up against racism within the last few weeks, I found out that my belonging in a group I loved & contributed a lot to is again conditional on my silence & how I "behave". I will no longer be complicit as a woman of colour, as a mother, as a human being.
Speaking up has cost me: tears, sense of betrayal, & profound hurt this past mth alone. I had to make the decision to leave this grp I helped form/shape because I wasn't valued enough to be heard+BELIEVED in trying to speak up for other racialized ppl who were harmed. In fact/3
I ended up being profoundly harmed personally too in the process of speaking up against #racism.
That was the cost of speaking up for just one instance.
Most #BIPOC have paid this price ++times & this mental/emotional harm is not even the overt physical violence that I know

others have had to bear as a cost for speaking up.
So, I ask again that you think about the cost of speaking up, the cost that ppl who speak up do pay & continue to pay because there is only one side when it comes to racism.

my values & losing my integrity would have been much worse.

So please, if you have the power to listen & make change when someone speaks up, pls do so and bear some of the load. Don't make that person pay for speaking up.
And please speak up against racism for others too.
