How PMs can be better partners to design:

Understand the thinking that goes into design work, and the full design process

Understand how design works with user research

Co-create roadmaps with design and eng, while PMs align roadmaps to business goals and have the final say.
Be inclusive of designers: Give shared credit for driving results. Bring design leads to cross-functional leadership syncs.

Communicate your expectations of design clearly, and let designers tell you what expectations make sense.

Teach designers how to bring an idea to market.
PMs shouldn’t be gatekeepers to analytics, but facilitators of designers having direct relationships with analytics.

Define customer metrics together with designers and analytics. Ask designers and researchers what matters most to the customers for a given project.
Designers and engineers have incredible ideas that can make a large impact.

PMs can be inclusive by publishing frameworks that make it transparent to the cross-functional team what factors into how an idea is assessed for viability.

This is fulfilling for everyone.
PMs can create regular forums for design and eng to share their ideas in.

These work:
- First 5 min of a standup
- A column in the team’s Trello
- Brainstorming session
- Crazy 8s
- Idea pitch event

The key is consistency, so team members feel comfortable bringing up ideas.
Don’t treat design as a service, but as equal partners.

Anticipate how you can help unblock design rather than blame design as a blocker.

Fight for the design function to have equal seniority to their equivalent product partners.
Rally for a proper head of design.

Don’t have the head of design report to a product or eng leader. That’s the surest way to make design (and design staffing) subject to the judgment of product or eng. It’s the opposite of being design-led.
