OK. Here's a thread of some stories, ads, etc from The Daily Colonist (Victoria, BC) for Jan 5th, 1960. No overarching theme here. Let's start with this warning from the front page from a Shell Oil exec: The Communists will take over Canada by 1962 (spoiler, did not happen) /1
Right next to this warning on the front page is a story about British Nazis declaring violence if ppl in Germany are prosecuted for antisemitism. Part of the article dismisses the rise in antisemitism across Europe and the world as "teenage hooligans." Hmmmm. /2
Also on the front page (they were crowded back then): Canada is "told" a few things. That it should "lead the world" but also that it was not admitting enough "displaced immigrants" - refugees - from Europe. /3
On the front page, there's also this story of a plane crash on Lopez island - the plane took off from the Naval Air Station at Whidbey. It was not a good week for workers in Washington - on page 2 there is a report of a cave-in that killed 3 construction workers in Seattle. /4
In Letters to the Editor (p. 5) there's a letter from WA Ferguson, MA, DD (2506 Orchard Ave) that takes issue with the paper's headline from week before that read: "Disarmament Spectre Hangs over Victoria." (Mrs.) Ellis Smalley (1285 Burnside) also took issue with the article /5
Here's two stories from pg 5 stacked on top of each other connected to logging in #Cowichan. One discusses layoffs by BC Forest Products and Mayo Lumber Company due to poor weather. The other connected to a BC Forest Products employee's dangerous driving /6
Here's a great ad for Reader's Digest. They are just asking questions. Specifically, why are skiers suicidal? /7
Anyway, also on page 5 a guy in Nanaimo found a 24 year old dime and maybe it's worth more than that. Or maybe not. /8
This is what was playing in Victoria theatres, including Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Third Man on the Mountain, and Yesterday's Enemy. /9
In the "Second News Section" there is a story familiar to most people on Vancouver Island (in BC?): The brand new high school in Esquimalt was already too small. Also, a little tid bit next to that - 1959 was a deadly year on BC's roads with 309 fatalities /10
It turns out the Tourism industry has been luring people from the prairie provinces to Vancouver Island for decades.../11
In other important news, a rabbit on a roof went "viral" and the new Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal was almost complete. /12
Here's a sweet photo of the Norris Family christening. The kids wore "matching silk organza gowns." /13
Kudos to the drivers of Tofino and Ucluelet who refused to be delayed by snow over the holidays. /14
From the Classified/Want Ads, a reminder that work for men and women was very different in 1960. Only single women need apply for a job in the Hosiery Department at The Bay /15
I love this line from The Haunted Bookshop on Fort Street: "Books are the Beanstalks that Jack's mind climbs upon" /16
Finally, the ads for building supplies are a reminder that Victoria was like 30% lumber yards for much of the 20th century. The "RanchPanel" was made by BC Forest Products at the mill which is today the Jutland/Selkirk development. /17
I'm only on page 15 of a 24 page paper at this point which gives you a sense of how much bigger newspapers were at this time. I hope this gave you a glimpse into Victoria/BC/The World in January 1960. View or hear the paper in full here https://archive.org/details/dailycolonist19600105/mode/2up /end
